Many people make New Years resolutions and either don’t know how to get started or simply don’t continue on with their commitments. Todays blog hopefully will give you inspiration to either get started or continue with your health resolutions.
It is now the 3rd week of the New year and this is when many peoples resolutions start going by the wayside.
As outlined in my blog entitled How To Make New Years Resolutions Stick, most New Years Resolutions fail. In fact only 8% of the population carry on their resolutions past the end of January. In case you missed this blog, you can access it here:http://kevinbradyhealth.ca/how-to-make-new-years-resolutions-stick/
My message is this: as much as you don’t want to do things to accomplish your health goals, just do it. For example, I have decided to enter the 6 day bike race in Sardegna once again this April. I also have a goal of qualifying for the Worlds to represent Canada at the National Triathlon championships in June. Therefore, I have set a goal to ramp up my training and ensure I am cycling or working out 7 times per week.
Many Days, I Don’t Feel Like Working Out
I can honestly say, many times and days I do not feel like working out however I just do it.
I was thinking of this tonight as I was at our “Brick” workout with others from our Triathlon Club(Triathlon Club of Burlington – triburlington.ca).
I arrived home from work after a very busy day business wise and the last thing I felt like doing was going to work out. Our workouts start at 6:30 p.m. and it is obviously dark then. So I flew home from work, got packed up, changed into my workout gear and then raced to get to the workout on time. The much “easier” decision would have been to stay home, have dinner and relax.
Because I have my goal of performing well in Sardegna plus qualifying for the Worlds in Triathlon, I felt I had to go.
So I showed up and ended up having a great workout. We did an hour of HIIT(High Intensity Interval Training) cycling and then went for an Interval run workout so a total of 90 mins of intense workout.
So the last thing I felt like doing was going to train however following the workout I felt amazing and was so pleased that I did. Even better was when I got home after 8:30 I couldnt wait to dive into my healthy plant based dinner based on having had a great workout.
So my message is simple, even when you don’t feel like it….just do it.
No Pain No Gain
As I outlined in last weeks blog, in order to get the results we want to get in life, we need to pay the price. We have to put in the work in order to get the results we want. The Sardegna race is my motivation as it is so long(6 days of consecutive racing)so I need to ensure that I put in the work in order to ensure I am ready. I also have the National Championships in Ottawa in order to earn a place at the Worlds next year as motivation. Therefore I have to put in the work to get the results that I want to achieve.
Your goal may be similar to mine or may be to simply just get active. Perhaps it is simply doing exercise 3 or 4 times per week. Whatever your goal, my message is to “just to do it.”
What You Sow, You Reap
Most mornings I set the alarm early as I prefer to do my workouts early in the morning and get them done as typically I don’t have time later in the day or night to fit them in. This time of year I set the alarm early and when I wake it is dark out. When most of the world is still sleeping, I am in my dark basement doing some sort of workout.
I must say, most mornings I would prefer to hit the snooze button and sleep in a little longer. The last thing I feel like doing is climbing out of bed and heading down to the basement or going to the Y for an early morning workout. However I know that in order to accomplish my goals, I know that I need to put in the work. Like in life, in many instances, we aren’t rewarded for our work for a long time. I likely won’t reap the rewards of my training until my race in Sardegna or my triathlon races in the summer but am paying the price now. Like in life, what you Sow is what you will Reap.
Exercise – The Fountain Of Youth
The best thing about my early morning workouts is that it gives me energy all day long as I outlined in my blog – 7 Secrets to Amazing Energy Every Day – http://kevinbradyhealth.ca/7-secrets-to-ama…energy-every-day/. After my workout I feel ready to tackle the world and have energy all day long in order to look after me, my family and our customers to the best of my ability. I find now that if I don’t workout in the morning I feel like I am “missing a step”.
So whatever goals you have set for yourself around health and fitness, please just do it. Whether you do it early in the morning, at lunch or later in the day, just please fit it in. It will pay huge dividends for you from a health standpoint down the road. And I promise you that you will feel much better all day long after doing some exercise.
To close, I wanted to quote my friend and mentor Rich Roll from his recent Instagram as I thought it was appropriate based on todays topic:
It doesn’t have to be perfect. It doesn’t have to be fun. It just has to be done. And sometimes done is the win.#BuildTheHouse#ThisIs50
I wish you great success in achieving whatever you have set out as your health goals this year.
Yours in the best of health, Kev
